Come all ye here & gather round, I'll a tale sad & profound A tale that’s true & was told to me, it’s a tale of loss & tragedy On Pigeon Hill or so I’m told, back in the days of the search for gold There camped a miner with his only child, in a lonely place so bleak so wild He worked his mine all through the day, & the little girl whiled the hours away Roamin the hillsides til the daylight’s end, & a little red bird was her only friend Through valleys deep & rocky springs, the red bird led her she could hear it sing In her scarlet coat that she loved to wear, the child and the bird made a handsome pair Oh the little red bird (2) One winter’s day the clouds rolled in, thunder & lightning made an awful din The wind it howled through the drivin rain, he called for his child but he called in vain He searched all night til the break of day, in his darkest hour he stopped to pray All the gold in the world I’d freely give, if my sweet child would only live Oh the little red bird (2) In the cold grey light of the early morn that miner cursed the day that he was born He found her body on the cold wet ground & the little red bird was hovering round He buried her there right where she lay, picked up his swag & he ran away To the end of the earth to the end of the world, he’d always mourn his little red bird Oh the little red bird (2) Now a lonely grave the place does mark & if you go there before its dark And if you’re silent, don’t say a word, you just might see that little red bird Oh the little red bird

Sign of Rain 04:54
When you wake up in the mornin to a rosy sky some say that’s a sign of rain And you washed your car it was dusty and dry might be a sign of rain When you get a lowdown lonesome feelin’ some say that’s a sign of rain When you see a huntsman crawling ‘cross the ceiling might be a sign of rain Oh for a sign of rain, I want to see a sign of rain A little rain’s gonna cool my brain wash us clean again Send us a sign of rain When a hush comes down & the clouds are low some say that’s a sign of rain And the ants get busy on the patio might be a sign of rain When your bones they ache and your joints they crack some say that’s a sign of rain And the black cockatoos are squawkin down the track might be a sign of rain Rain rain rain, let it rain rain rain When a hush comes down & the clouds are low some say that’s a sign of rain And the ants get busy on the patio might be a sign of rain When you get a lowdown lonesome feelin’ some say that’s a sign of rain When you see a huntsman crawlin cross the ceiling might be a sign of rain

Wild Almonds 03:24
Wild almonds are in bloom, there’s a chill upon the air Looking like an early spring, the trees and me we’re still here The winter chilled my heart, I need the warmth of the blazing sun Spring will bring a brand new start, got my eye on someone But its not you its not you I saw you again today, it had been a long long time Felt a twistin in my heart because I know you’re the hurtin kind You looked away and passed me by, we are better off apart Now I know the reason why, I gave somebody else my heart Its not you its not you Wild almonds are in bloom, it’s the season when reason flies out the door I’m gonna rearrange my room into a love shack baby for the one that I adore But its not you its not you

When the sheep lay down in the middle of the morn They hang their heads you can hear them moan ‘oo oo We got no grass to chew Its just the middle of the morning & we’ve got those empty paddock blues We bin hangin around this paddock for a couple of days we munched & we crunched everything away boo hoo We got no hay to chew Its just the middle of the morning & we’ve got those empty paddock blues Well we ate up every blade of rye and oats Now this paddock ain’t fit for a sheep or a goat Listen Mr farmer we want you to know That we need a bale of hay, some lucerne to go We been waitin and a waitin for some food to come We wait and we wait but we ain’t seen none well you want your wool and we want a meal listen Mr Farmer can we make a deal when the sheep lay down in the middle of the morn they hang their heads lookin so forlorn woo hoo what are we going to do its just the middle of the morning & we’ve got those empty paddock blues every lamb and ewe its just the middle of the morning & we’ve got those empty paddock no grass to be had we’ve got those empty paddock blues

Well good morning jaybird what news do you bring today You’d better tell me something happy or else you can fly away Well I see you jaybird sitting over in the blackwood tree Come and sit here on my shoulder and tell your tale to me You can tell me I got lucky, tell me my ship came in Tell me just about any old line don’t mention the mess I’m in Good morning jaybird what news do you bring today You’d better tell me something happy or else you can fly away Well they tell me jaybird that you’re bad luck on the wing If you can turn my bad luck around I’ll give you most anything You can tell me I got lucky, tell me my ship came in Tell me just about any old line don’t mention the mess I’m in Good morning jaybird what news do you bring today You’d better tell me something happy or else you can fly away

I went down to the waterfront, on the early shift I was lookin for Bluey, somebody said he skipped He used to be a big shot on the union floor Until he shot his mouth off, he ain’t around no more And nobody wants to talk about it, nobody wants to know about the disappearing man I went down to the Royal Hotel lookin for some clues Ran into my friend Shirley, said is there any news? she just smiled and shook her head, looked into her beer and she sighed If you don’t know nothin, you got nothin to hide And nobody wants to talk about it, nobody wants to know about the disappearing man Maybe he took a holiday on some tropical isle Maybe he’s lyin in the sun somewhere, wearing nothing but a great big smile I wouldn’t like to imagine he’s in some sort of strife Maybe he met another woman, and nicked off from his wife And nobody wants to talk about it, nobody wants to know about the disappearing man And nobody wants to talk about it, nobody wants to know about the disappearing man

Judgment Day 03:15
When I start to scream its gonna shake this house And the walls will crumble and the roof will tumble down And the glass will smash and the trees will sway On my judgment day When I start to scream a roaring wind will blow And the sun is gonna shrink, its gonna rain and snow There’ll be nowhere to go there’ll be nowhere to stay On my judgment day I’m not playin’ when I say it, you’d better run away on my judgment day Only a fool would stay, somebody’s gonna pay ooh yeah When I start to scream, its gonna crack your bones And your eyes will melt down into fiery stones All over the world everybody gonna pray On my judgment day

Time 04:05
If it’s only a short time I want to spend it with you I hope that it’s a long time I want to spend it with you I know there’s gonna be some rough times I want to spend it with you There’ll never be enough time I want to spend it with you The good and the bad time I want to spend it with you The bitter sweet and sad time I want to spend it with you The sweet makin love time I want to spend it with you Fittin hand in glove time I want to spend it with you sittin back and feelin lazy Wanna run feelin crazy oooh time The thick & the thin time The guilty sin bin time oooh time The day and the night time I want to spend it with you Screamin yellin and polite time I want to spend it with you The free & the pay time I want to spend it with you

REVIEWS for ‘Critters & Specimens’

“Marni finds the soul in all the tunes on the release. She lifts the listener up and gently rocks them..............blends the folk tradition with a hint of country and a pop sensibility that make the tracks accessible to both folk purists and those who are more interested in pop music”.
Dennis Halsey
BestFemaleMusicians.com Oct 2004

“Marni Sheehan is a real writer. Her songs are all substantial, they’re real stories not just cute ideas spun out over three minutes”
Art Streams Magazine Oct 2004

“Marni has gathered a rich and varied combination of musicians and instruments to support her nostalgically fresh collection of original songs...........Sheehan’s jugband and blues-rock background is fully represented in the layers behind the humour, candour, depth and simplicity to be found in her poignant lyrics”
Folk Alliance Newsletter Sep 2004 .

“Some of the lyrics are surprisingly dark compared with the sweet melody and relaxed presentation.......a thought provoking album”
